My coworker and I were assigned to the same event. The event was supposed to happen in a fancy remodeled part of the building. But at the last minute the leader of the event moved us to an old room in the building. My reaction to my coworker was, “Aw. Poop.”
In one of my more equanimous moments, I would have shrugged and just gone to the new location. But my coworker doesn’t always live with equanimity. So my response to them was, “Aw. Poop.” When I said it, I did have a degree of aversion to the new location as I was still clinging to the fancy remodeled location. I’m sure I said it because I wanted to cement our collegiality.
That wasn’t a fair thing to do to myself. It was an unskillful modeling of a response that wasn’t kind to myself, nor to those who heard it.
From now on, I will endeavor to speak more skillfully. Let’s see how long that lasts, eh? It’s a goal, right?! 🙂
